Seattle Freeway Park, designed by Lawrence Halprin, and built in 1976
Described as ‘Brutalist’ by many, yet it doesn’t feel all that brutal to me. It has a flow, and sense of rhythm to it. The contours to the sides of the cubes make them look as if they have been extruded.
I must admit to one of my own plans being strongly influenced by this design. Brutal or not, it is a very well realised space, and continues in the theme of public space reclaimed.
